What Are Expansion Cards?

An expansion card is an electronic device which slots into the expansion slot in any computer/laptop and give the computer a new ability such as a new graphics card which will upgrade the graphics and/or may add the option to connect a HDMI monitor through a HDMI slot on the Expansion Card.

Sound Card:

The sound card is an expansion card that allows the computer to send audio information to an audio device such as speakers,a  pair of headphones or a surround sound system if your a PC Gamer! Sound cards usually plug into the PCI connector on the motherboard.

Some Sound Cards can cost up to £200 but the average standard sound card usually costs around £25.

How to install a Sound Card:

Network Card

A network card (also called a Network Adapter) acts as the interface between a computer and a network cable. The purpose of the network card is to prepare, send, and control data on the network and mainly uses Ethernet to connect to the internet.

Network Cards are usually not required on on PCs anymore as they usually have them built into the main motherboard of the computer.

When a network card is needed they usually cost about £5 to £10 for a decent regular one with only Ethernet on it.

Graphics Card

A video card (also called a graphics card) is an expansion card which generates a feed of output images to a display. Most video cards offer various functions such as accelerated rendering of 3d and 2d graphics, MPEG-2/MPEG-4 decoding, TV output, or the ability to connect multiple monitors via VGA, RGB or HDMI.

Graphics Cards can cost quite a lot of money depending on the type of person you are, for example if your a gamer and want a good graphics card, they can cost up to £500, whereas if your a regular person just wanting a computer they can cost just £30.
